Summary

A DARK FAMILY HISTORY

After a harrowing night with their sister and a trip to the hospital, Mogumo tells Tetsu about their past。 Between their long struggle with gender dysphoria, the pain of an unsupportive family, and their desperate act of self-harm, life has been far from easy for them。 Despite the friction with their family, however, Mogumo decides to reach out for reconciliation。 What will happen when they see their parents again?

It’s one last chance for acceptance and happiness as the series quietly loudly comes to a close。After a rather wild fourth volume, it was left to this one to wrap everything up while dealing with a lot of trauma spread over a lot of people。 Consider yourself fairly warned that there’s a lot of -phobia and unfortunate suicidal ideation。I do like that Mogumo is no angel in this circumstance - they have their reasons, certainly, given how badly things have been at home, but their lashing out definitely doesn’t exist in a vacuum。 Not to say they shouldn’t defend themselves, but even things said in defence can get out of hand and they have to come to terms with that。The problem I have is largely to do with the degree of it all。 When this series was turned up to ten on the drama scale it was actually pretty engaging。 This domestic stuff went to eleven the whole time and it came across as too much。My genuine apologies to anybody who has threatened to operate on themselves out of terror over puberty, but it really feels like a swing for the fences that doesn’t work in this context。 Again, I am just some middle-aged cis guy reading a manga, so if this is actually a common thing or reflects your struggle, I’m not trying to invalidate it。 I simply don’t have the context。Bad Manga Dad is also especially terrible, which is likely pretty accurate given his absenteeism and focus on the family’s lineage。 He’s so despicable at times that he can be a lot to take and I wouldn’t recommend this if you find parental abuse triggering。The book almost gives him enough backstory to make his ending reasonable, especially when mom has a turn that I actually really liked, but the art gives him an almost villainous air more than I would have wanted as it reduces him to a cartoon at times。It was nice to see Sakura and Mogumo patch up their own relationship and also that when Mogumo tries to mend things they acknowledge their own faults while not taking the entire responsibility on themselves (especially since they had no control over what they were born as)。The whole thing is very complicated and I have a lot of complicated feelings about telling this type of story while also going all-in on the quasi-moe aesthetic。 I don’t know that the series ever handled things well, but it did pretty good, and this volume just feels like the reach exceeding the grasp a bit。The denouement is certainly satisfying enough, going with a message of tolerance and, hey, you could do worse than pushing that notion。 While not everybody gets there, there’s a lot of support and the way they push the cafe as a safe haven is nice。 Safe spaces are important。Regrettably there’s much less focus on the Tetsu and Mogumo relationship, which was the strongest stuff in the series。 It’s a bummer - we need more manga that explore a broader range of sexual health and identity issues (shout-out to the superlative Sex Ed 120%), but it’s remiss to give this one a pass just because of its subject matter。3 stars - like the last volume, these final chapters really didn’t feel like they were the series playing to its strengths。 It’s not bad, but in abandoning what little subtlety it had it went off the rails a bit for me。 Our Dreams At Dusk handled the safe space and grappling with sexuality better and remains my pick for an exploration of some of these topics。 。。。more

This was absolutely the ending I was hoping for, but there was no resolve to Sakura's eating disorder, so I'm still questioning why bother adding it to volume four if it was never going to be brought up again。 Other than that, everything is wrapped up nicely and it felt like a nice conclusion for everyone。 This was absolutely the ending I was hoping for, but there was no resolve to Sakura's eating disorder, so I'm still questioning why bother adding it to volume four if it was never going to be brought up again。 Other than that, everything is wrapped up nicely and it felt like a nice conclusion for everyone。 。。。more

Overall: 3。5/5 - the last two volumes felt a bit rushed! i wish this was longer :( the characters were wonderful though。 it’s quite hard to find a nonbinary mc so reading this was a pleasant experience。

thoughts for all 5 volumes:- incredibly sweet, wholesome and hopeful story about a non-binary high school student who starts working at a maid café (with some darker moments too)。- appreciated seeing how mogumo had to navigate life in a hyper binary society。 - loved the supportive queer friend group so much。 - mogumo and tetsu were just adorable together。- there's quite a bit of on-page misgendering - in the first volume, tetsu kept referring to his older sister as "brother" even though it's est thoughts for all 5 volumes:- incredibly sweet, wholesome and hopeful story about a non-binary high school student who starts working at a maid café (with some darker moments too)。- appreciated seeing how mogumo had to navigate life in a hyper binary society。 - loved the supportive queer friend group so much。 - mogumo and tetsu were just adorable together。- there's quite a bit of on-page misgendering - in the first volume, tetsu kept referring to his older sister as "brother" even though it's established she's trans, but later on he learns and starts calling her sister。 mogumo also faced many instances of people trying to fit them into a box but they always stayed firm about who they are。- i just wish this was longer since the last two volumes felt a bit rushed and packed in too many difficult topics in too few chapters。overall, i'm so glad i read this and definitely recommend。 cws: transphobia, homophobia (external + internal), misgendering, on-page self-harm attemptrep: non-binary mc, trans women side characters, gay side character, lesbian side character, nb/m romance 。。。more

More of a 3。5 star rating but I gave it 4 starts since it had a happy ending。I feel like this series could’ve continued for another few volumes。 While I’m very happy that Mogumo got their happy ending, the larger issues in their family and specifically with their younger sister weren’t really addressed。 I’m still deeply worried for Mogumo’s younger sister and am sad that her part of the story was cut short without having her issue properly addressed and handled。

Trigger warnings: Self harm, Self hate, and homophobia
